<br />
Here are two links I ve got from my supervisor ,they are good for matte painters:<br />

Ideas so far are:<br />
1.Get Ikaros projects concept art works and clean the layers one by one for the benefits of breakdowns making.<br />
<br />
2.Make some 3D cards movements to avoid people from getting bored.<br />
<br />
3.Develop some new works and practise the skills as well<br />
<br />
4.Always put the background music "back".<br />

<br />
I was totally confused and didn't know what kind of colours could suit our last one, it's a big chalenge for me to make an entire nighttime city with so many different lights, I need to use as least 5 colours of lights but not mess them up.<br />
<br />
I searched for some awesome art works of the whole city stuff:<br />
<br />

1.From the first one, I learned how to use the light beams to lighting up the whole city.<br />
2. for the second one, i learned how to create the space using huge amount of 3D elements and also I took the reference of the fog and cloud.<br />
3.The third one influenced me of the small lights on the buidings .<br />
<br />
<br />
To let the final shot's colours as colourful as the shots before .I took a snapshot from the pacific rim's trailer as my rough colour plate:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaeI2Nv7EbXWciegwn5IVso56GyWopaSWMdqM-1HI2eKfP6EhU7AHkpip7KRr8VrcnkhQHdtD5O8jV73zrQNH5uN9Vu7eHRBzDFQqIP4zCUolWhqy8_Y_x3QaBa0dEKXo1JQ28fXCd1zvB/s1600/QQ%E6%88%AA%E5%9B%BE20130805234000.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="203" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaeI2Nv7EbXWciegwn5IVso56GyWopaSWMdqM-1HI2eKfP6EhU7AHkpip7KRr8VrcnkhQHdtD5O8jV73zrQNH5uN9Vu7eHRBzDFQqIP4zCUolWhqy8_Y_x3QaBa0dEKXo1JQ28fXCd1zvB/s400/QQ%E6%88%AA%E5%9B%BE20130805234000.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
The final shot completed:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkZMpCopOh6ZRJAvZCGWTWOsvqPaxBnWquFW2pl0imSlJ3xUEyjnCTEj3Y_gJ1KM5x29suHPfHoCzgNkew7eTrcyST_xxuSjMTyS5te2Detx-WKmuNPQSGlxib4qvyvovH5Kidr95CV6bb/s1600/final.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkZMpCopOh6ZRJAvZCGWTWOsvqPaxBnWquFW2pl0imSlJ3xUEyjnCTEj3Y_gJ1KM5x29suHPfHoCzgNkew7eTrcyST_xxuSjMTyS5te2Detx-WKmuNPQSGlxib4qvyvovH5Kidr95CV6bb/s640/final.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
For the compositon of this shot, I prefer to use the triangle one to make the scene more stable.Also point at the character.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4np1bo2khldT9qV1GzhxY8YJg5YI70KZEabYVPUheDYS02wjNan5_CV9v6V0UfdLpzPszIN4KYVkKNfFyEa4tI8yUXMSMx8_PNtwpFu9sICtGNqA15BAyQaqx7kkZV-22z9L2Fd-TIFs1/s1600/fina1l.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4np1bo2khldT9qV1GzhxY8YJg5YI70KZEabYVPUheDYS02wjNan5_CV9v6V0UfdLpzPszIN4KYVkKNfFyEa4tI8yUXMSMx8_PNtwpFu9sICtGNqA15BAyQaqx7kkZV-22z9L2Fd-TIFs1/s640/fina1l.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I used 4 lights to ponit at the character to emphasise him :<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRDzJP7VAj8ym0S2vyjZNn00CtvFkJvV8CC3wSSiriDR1UHHDVsuvhdrPWZVxp4OknSF9KbMEET_Asu6htYWNrkI4zB5mfFr44WPKFcRcxNDAyi6AM0FbwtTt-kxa-ziFqKx6TyTVgQtjB/s1600/finaw1l.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRDzJP7VAj8ym0S2vyjZNn00CtvFkJvV8CC3wSSiriDR1UHHDVsuvhdrPWZVxp4OknSF9KbMEET_Asu6htYWNrkI4zB5mfFr44WPKFcRcxNDAyi6AM0FbwtTt-kxa-ziFqKx6TyTVgQtjB/s640/finaw1l.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
Make people find the focus clearly and quickly is also one of the main purpose of this scene, this shot will only take less than a second time in our final film, so what I need to do is make it as impressive as I can and also make several hints for people to find out. Although the final frame is showing people the whole city not the character, but make sure the character is still one of the main part of this shot is still important.<br />
<br />
Main methods I used in This scene is warm colours for the center part , dark and cold colours for the corner and front element but still keep te details.<br />
<br />
For the final comp stage, my contribution is supervised the comp team to finishe= this most complex scene to reach the result as similar as my concept.<br />
<br />
This is the final comp,We built the 3D basic boxes shapes of the city and exported them into nuke, Lighted them in Nuke and also created many colour pieces to paste on the buildings , use the softlight layer and overlay layers to apply the colours.<br />
<br />
<br />I also made the grond texture for the final shot used the texture below (I made in photoshop) as well:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMst6_nX03QMdshpAPECkotxrs1llO99SEH7SRGsCWycn7qQgvBNJhzG5UJgMYFSCUMu6RU5U0dXcLlW__5tDJIxeu4WE7oiPqZh_NaAxUB0ACyfLDCAsWk9y_KDD2DGJUjeZ88dNCYc6h/s1600/QQ%E6%88%AA%E5%9B%BE20130806134505.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="484" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMst6_nX03QMdshpAPECkotxrs1llO99SEH7SRGsCWycn7qQgvBNJhzG5UJgMYFSCUMu6RU5U0dXcLlW__5tDJIxeu4WE7oiPqZh_NaAxUB0ACyfLDCAsWk9y_KDD2DGJUjeZ88dNCYc6h/s640/QQ%E6%88%AA%E5%9B%BE20130806134505.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Here's the final comp of the final shot:<br />
<br />

<br />
Here is the 3D placement of shot 10 by Michael :<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
The completed one:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHoG8Gxy2OPP5pIDGYiWP_PRmlv2GKChjzEwrZJpIDKhRJTOE-GShsZ9CthX_57pTraPp7jSWgpGs5G6UXlVKlDyEwKxphKQyTgoDP-AJsyqadXK001tmJDdzsefTY5cdxOh3xA3FBr-rN/s1600/QQ%E6%88%AA%E5%9B%BE20130805232207.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="344" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHoG8Gxy2OPP5pIDGYiWP_PRmlv2GKChjzEwrZJpIDKhRJTOE-GShsZ9CthX_57pTraPp7jSWgpGs5G6UXlVKlDyEwKxphKQyTgoDP-AJsyqadXK001tmJDdzsefTY5cdxOh3xA3FBr-rN/s640/QQ%E6%88%AA%E5%9B%BE20130805232207.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
As the same rules of the shot008,I made the liveaction part darker and reduced the saturation.To push things back, it's very neccesary to use the low transparency colours to cover the small elements around the main building.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11920072146016882832noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6891509902242820286.post-50152570953439841242013-08-05T14:49:00.000-07:002013-08-05T14:49:27.160-07:00Shot007_completed and issuesThis is one of the narrow sky shots I need to get it done. It's a challenge that to create the depth in such a narrow space, the most simple way we were thinking was just fill it with a sky matte painting, but we declined that because :first of all, all of our shots happening in the nighttime, although we can fill up with the night time sky, but there won't be enough details to support this scene.Secondly, if we use the sky, then the lights we are going to add on the walls will not be strong enough to effect the skys and give it uniform colours.The last thing is, sky is not a good enough element for the sci fi work.<br />
<br />
Fortunately, I found a really good reference game called "Remember me", there'a scene that happens in the similar scene as we shot:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdq9ZNe95CucIB3BBxSzMCAySVAQieLUf7t6IHQVTGEjm-bo5pmYkNuLrDFXLtY4w63WhbELROGElf5Y8NQRF8FUSLVYCwgeCghIymSBiqpIkCnJHTnR4FgVnU5zfIK7itVhK2daVm1q2f/s1600/QQ%E6%88%AA%E5%9B%BE20130805221000.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="202" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdq9ZNe95CucIB3BBxSzMCAySVAQieLUf7t6IHQVTGEjm-bo5pmYkNuLrDFXLtY4w63WhbELROGElf5Y8NQRF8FUSLVYCwgeCghIymSBiqpIkCnJHTnR4FgVnU5zfIK7itVhK2daVm1q2f/s400/QQ%E6%88%AA%E5%9B%BE20130805221000.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
I took the reference of my lighting in the concept art:<br />
<br />
These are the original 3D elements layer and plate:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7TLZmd65cJNIXHQT6Ylqv7u3MFU7jymT2NPorPKWufW7whA2PYu9BrKfJYkNOkgT-x_ehbJUub7hbd8LZaMSZPuSJw9g8TXmLZC0rIajvNGMcy_IMWpAjtkBToQIHWjS0Prhth1qkD2Cj/s1600/QQ%E6%88%AA%E5%9B%BE20130805220137.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="362" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7TLZmd65cJNIXHQT6Ylqv7u3MFU7jymT2NPorPKWufW7whA2PYu9BrKfJYkNOkgT-x_ehbJUub7hbd8LZaMSZPuSJw9g8TXmLZC0rIajvNGMcy_IMWpAjtkBToQIHWjS0Prhth1qkD2Cj/s640/QQ%E6%88%AA%E5%9B%BE20130805220137.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEZcMbpnCbYw5yahiUGQPMUnuaE9FV6prgCc26jHXuMh8WcCyG6jKRVHqBjC3fKgD8_5nEDwINkKV4G6TMlVtRs5YZR6Nq-OTrajo3n2bl6NWYZg4zXJG-y3tHBModTR6UqMFl4c20Fsim/s1600/QQ%E6%88%AA%E5%9B%BE20130805220144.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="356" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEZcMbpnCbYw5yahiUGQPMUnuaE9FV6prgCc26jHXuMh8WcCyG6jKRVHqBjC3fKgD8_5nEDwINkKV4G6TMlVtRs5YZR6Nq-OTrajo3n2bl6NWYZg4zXJG-y3tHBModTR6UqMFl4c20Fsim/s640/QQ%E6%88%AA%E5%9B%BE20130805220144.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
For this scene, the feeling I want to catch is dangerous and mysterious, we would defocus the background to let people can't see what's over there exatcly,but still need a lot of details to keep the quality.<br />
<br />
The final version completed:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAFDz6wDsUTZDVRx7MZGwmAXpa36xXK9zAV1CMkSnJu4BzxlDtrln_OsIYqOeGHMTCnQ6WUuAVioDjRpO1rSjZ4HvQXAPyw1Z613YjD4LPN-eTr2NSfDaoXHdTf3tP8SZTZSep6gVFbYXo/s1600/QQ%E6%88%AA%E5%9B%BE20130805220932.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAFDz6wDsUTZDVRx7MZGwmAXpa36xXK9zAV1CMkSnJu4BzxlDtrln_OsIYqOeGHMTCnQ6WUuAVioDjRpO1rSjZ4HvQXAPyw1Z613YjD4LPN-eTr2NSfDaoXHdTf3tP8SZTZSep6gVFbYXo/s640/QQ%E6%88%AA%E5%9B%BE20130805220932.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
I created the left and right sides' matte paintings to help lighting up the whole <br />
scene. and created the high contrast of the colours.<br />
Red could be the represent of dangerous, so I added the long red light as the main light for it.<br />

<br />
The colour reference I took from the two amazing art works below:<br />
<br />

The first one is the represent of the warm colour work in the night time, the below one is in the cold tone ,I wanted to created the colours between warm and cold but doesn't messed up.<br />

The orignal 3D elements layers:<br />

The composition test:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Firstly, I earased the round building in the middle to leave a breath place for the character .I used the warm colour to make the buildings near the focus come front ,I did some matte painting lights for the nearer buildings with red and yellow. For pushing the other elements back forward and make the depth, i used the blue and cyan-blue and also reduced their transparency,to let people feel they are far away and coverd by some air and fog. The area of the brightest light is for the character to fly by.<br />
<br />
<br />
The right side of shot002:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

i used some high resolution photo materials and painted over them to make the foggy atomosphere, I don't think make the both sides balance and fill up with the same buildings could be a good choice, so i chose to make this side more mysterious feeling, because our character is flying from the left to right, it's a good feeling that he fly into a world that we can barely see the details to make the audience feel curious and not to feel bored.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11920072146016882832noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6891509902242820286.post-3829681200454419702013-08-05T11:46:00.002-07:002013-08-05T11:46:56.070-07:00Shot008 _completedShot008 is a shot we shoot in an alley, this is the original plate cleaned below:<br />

We can only see a narrow sky in this scene, we want more scifi feeling. To get the result, I deleted the right part of the walls,Michael added some 3D scifi buidings in it. Here are the layers of the 3D elements:<br />

This is the completed version of the pure 3D shot008:</div>

It already has the feeling of depth,but if we see through it, there are some perspective issues that coudn't be ignored.The most obvious one is the white elevator in the right side , I did some perspective lines to help us to find the problems.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXXCIXB4iB6_p4R3mnwcsfQhKkXWjobA3qE9Yxah-eVYYhiMPQi2JTMVP5KoGF7aWJPtH9hqHf0DF9Uzw8U45Qthnr4UUpdbtPrtLNk3iMR2Td7L_T-2zpeQfKaOPCNOxlyvppWHXMGMkT/s1600/QQ%E6%88%AA%E5%9B%BE20130805191332.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="358" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXXCIXB4iB6_p4R3mnwcsfQhKkXWjobA3qE9Yxah-eVYYhiMPQi2JTMVP5KoGF7aWJPtH9hqHf0DF9Uzw8U45Qthnr4UUpdbtPrtLNk3iMR2Td7L_T-2zpeQfKaOPCNOxlyvppWHXMGMkT/s640/QQ%E6%88%AA%E5%9B%BE20130805191332.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
The<span class="short_text" id="result_box" lang="en"><span class="hps"> vanishing Point of the elevator is totally different from the buidings' which will make the scene never looks right. And the </span></span><span class="short_text" id="result_box" lang="en"><span class="hps">Burj Dubai in the left bottom increased the burden of the whole scene again, it's </span></span><span class="short_text" id="result_box" lang="en"><span class="hps">unnecessary and destroyed the depth.</span></span><br />

As we can see , i corrected the perspective issues which appeared before, also added different lights to make the style uniformed,I gave a spot light in photoshop to highlight the depth also covered some details in the corners to emphasise the character.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
I havn't modofied the colours a lot of the walls in the concept art stage, I guided the comp team modified the colours and added several warm lights out of the windows in the comp stage.<br />
<br />
Here is the final comp result, the matte painting I created has been used directly in the final movie .<br />
<br />
This shot is for the second part that people could recognise that the character is falling down, so or the depressive and sad feeling we discussed to make the scene darker and bluer.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

For this shot , I contributed the idea of making different kind of lights in the tunnel to decorate and also illuminate it.<br />
The work I need to do in this stage is fill up the little square space with matte painting background.<br />
<br />
<br />
The first early time matte painting for this shot:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLHouas_QGxz3K70cXDVUerguWpV0xM_jitpgkWull92o6pULMV_TF1bmHHhbr77n58ph0XjOXG1s4DYf_DAx_9P6yKjCYkbo-PhyiG5HbGKJ7XIPdKkiysCbt-7vUXZGU4bDcv3UK9qnQ/s1600/QQ%E6%88%AA%E5%9B%BE20130805174043.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLHouas_QGxz3K70cXDVUerguWpV0xM_jitpgkWull92o6pULMV_TF1bmHHhbr77n58ph0XjOXG1s4DYf_DAx_9P6yKjCYkbo-PhyiG5HbGKJ7XIPdKkiysCbt-7vUXZGU4bDcv3UK9qnQ/s400/QQ%E6%88%AA%E5%9B%BE20130805174043.jpg" width="360" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Unfortunately, this painting is in the daylight before I decided to make the whole movie in the night, so it doesn't match our project well, but it was a good practise of the making of buildings in matte painting also a valuable space and colour control parctise.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />

I corrected the colours into red and blue ,also used the red light to highlight the scend,make it looks more myserious.<br />

The problems I can see now after I tried alot of way to improve my environmental design are:<br />
<ol>
<li>There's no contrast among these colours, we can't really tell which part is infront and which is behind.</li>
<li>Although the purpose i used different angles of the buidings is want to confuse people , but it also confused me, all the spaces are messed up in this scene.</li>
<li>No focus.</li>
</ol>
For create the scifi feeling and destroyed city as well, I modelled several damaged pillars in MAYA to take place of the original ones.<br />
<br />
The 3D pillars:<br />

I used some fog to cover some unperfect part of the texture, and also make the balance of the buidings.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11920072146016882832noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6891509902242820286.post-90920483400970342132013-08-05T09:05:00.001-07:002013-08-05T09:06:16.331-07:00First 3d elements version of shot003 &004<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Shot6 is a shot which has strong perspective angle,I found two ways to create the space for it.<br />
<br />
The original plates for this shot:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
The first version of shot005:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZyCJiLAYKxYCJrjZc1Hhg_R4KrC8oklwbgzreIQdstoVlG2N-UViya2SIe0VO_NonQnEKbcRcVGQ_BjXiRpoP7XcKbg7TWki7QcQnB940HSYotRZyxbsNkHR7WrRUhNkuK2YXwe8rAGZy/s1600/QQ%E6%88%AA%E5%9B%BE20130805153315.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="356" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZyCJiLAYKxYCJrjZc1Hhg_R4KrC8oklwbgzreIQdstoVlG2N-UViya2SIe0VO_NonQnEKbcRcVGQ_BjXiRpoP7XcKbg7TWki7QcQnB940HSYotRZyxbsNkHR7WrRUhNkuK2YXwe8rAGZy/s640/QQ%E6%88%AA%E5%9B%BE20130805153315.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
I've got the inspirations below:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOCaBD9c-tqzJMj1pnluTv4IIsP2IQ0A9jfNYdTjUoO0MGzgKU1P1YmzsjT5TbfwdUwmFaQ3re5QbcSfZ20kRoX6L4ULLXEUl-xtOJk46mKO-QjMM5Ay__CZbmD5hPOosUWznjB_QCN8rv/s1600/QQ%E6%88%AA%E5%9B%BE20130805154713.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="153" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOCaBD9c-tqzJMj1pnluTv4IIsP2IQ0A9jfNYdTjUoO0MGzgKU1P1YmzsjT5TbfwdUwmFaQ3re5QbcSfZ20kRoX6L4ULLXEUl-xtOJk46mKO-QjMM5Ay__CZbmD5hPOosUWznjB_QCN8rv/s400/QQ%E6%88%AA%E5%9B%BE20130805154713.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
For this version ,I created a space with different angle, deleted most of the 3D elements and filled up with matte painting. But when I tried to comp in Nuke ,we found it's unable to use matte painting for the background, the camerais moving, even just a little bit, but still could cause the perspective problem.<br />
<br />
The final version:<br />

I used the same colour as the shot006 , and also made a small warm and shiny space in the middle of this scene for the character.<br />
<br />
The final comp with character in it:<br />
<br />

<br />
This is the seperated layers of the shot006:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

BACK<br />
When I applied all of the layers together in photoshop, the scene is like this:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQ8Y1GMv6mbg5VEgSb6jE4ta3z_YuKVkGB6VnhEge50uuvvy3JHJRCGcK5jeelNwhGyyiKUVsp2f0qjRgvjxpT9Xt0nIuvVXrQJnroQgm4kPoGe_yybIwi87IJoEfloDzrx0sOyWvPfE4S/s1600/06MP_back.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQ8Y1GMv6mbg5VEgSb6jE4ta3z_YuKVkGB6VnhEge50uuvvy3JHJRCGcK5jeelNwhGyyiKUVsp2f0qjRgvjxpT9Xt0nIuvVXrQJnroQgm4kPoGe_yybIwi87IJoEfloDzrx0sOyWvPfE4S/s640/06MP_back.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
And also we need to add the liveaction things in it:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCFQ_2RBr6rkrVKy_xxkndtkiaRrkXihTQOmjjhdDH0C4HwodqJ8xvZyYpznwfALujL7a7IrizpdG1diWTiJ0AeGVW6IfuCrgbMm0XqEGv0SyziY5zzNZHKGNMsbTWXO5hZWlf38cif2x3/s1600/QQ%E6%88%AA%E5%9B%BE20130805143952.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="358" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCFQ_2RBr6rkrVKy_xxkndtkiaRrkXihTQOmjjhdDH0C4HwodqJ8xvZyYpznwfALujL7a7IrizpdG1diWTiJ0AeGVW6IfuCrgbMm0XqEGv0SyziY5zzNZHKGNMsbTWXO5hZWlf38cif2x3/s640/QQ%E6%88%AA%E5%9B%BE20130805143952.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
(the liveaction part 's colours 've already be modified )<br />
<br />
As we can see , no one can tell where is the focus of this scene, the only thing we can tell is there are just amazing elements filled up the whole screen without a place could breath or point.<br />
<br />
Our character is in the yellow area below:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5L4IJewqXwPbuM-ntvdYTAA1JJzrX9DMTmq4cAtUqpiGbLFIPKTKRkYS35B1b8IX1zFIWVkre9PuT6j2J1QiHMoBdX40NRqyp9KuuDzJra4VxsDkAbTJ4EQ5k1GvWk0ezklVnU3SZpwI7/s1600/QQ%E6%88%AA%E5%9B%BE20130805144543.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="358" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5L4IJewqXwPbuM-ntvdYTAA1JJzrX9DMTmq4cAtUqpiGbLFIPKTKRkYS35B1b8IX1zFIWVkre9PuT6j2J1QiHMoBdX40NRqyp9KuuDzJra4VxsDkAbTJ4EQ5k1GvWk0ezklVnU3SZpwI7/s640/QQ%E6%88%AA%E5%9B%BE20130805144543.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
but so far, obviously the main element and the "focus"is the huge round building in the middle, it covers most of the area in this shot ,unfortunately, this shot has been called the most tough shot in our object.That's why i began with this one.<br />
<br />
<br />
To creat the atomosphere , i did some research and checked different artist's matte panitings to learn how to make space for people to breathe and how to create the space.which is the most valuable thing i learned from this shot.<br />
<br />
The reference of this shot:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXBEt2_YARqHpWyXkes6aYt8SxDKcOumnLV7cErAd6rlPBmfAA3lR-5bdX_-1FQhHkFFQHubtjB89WgfY-YYaN2Cizk0s4R4uGoh9GlcG9Yte8asWMWasfHecaFUTtYYppBkyOGZziMdTT/s1600/QQ%E6%88%AA%E5%9B%BE20130805145301.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="334" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXBEt2_YARqHpWyXkes6aYt8SxDKcOumnLV7cErAd6rlPBmfAA3lR-5bdX_-1FQhHkFFQHubtjB89WgfY-YYaN2Cizk0s4R4uGoh9GlcG9Yte8asWMWasfHecaFUTtYYppBkyOGZziMdTT/s640/QQ%E6%88%AA%E5%9B%BE20130805145301.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>

To create amazing atomosphere, we need to know:no matter how detailed , how amazing the original 3D elements are, we still can't use all of them, we need to choose which part should we keep and what we should throw away, if we not willing to delete or cover some unessecary things, we'll never going to make it.<br />
<br />
The first step I did is deleted the huge round building layer in the middle.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQ2GYpcV_obNRbibGQFJXRQWs4q64ryklcqsUfEw_32zQ8JeScL_bly4uZ4vPlUP93rVRIseb6WPTOjCTz02GMcS-_LGZsFg-aQsw5HcwPh1GfjQJtRlVYF88JZXKZB2szKKIPYi7sJ-wB/s1600/QQ%E6%88%AA%E5%9B%BE20130805145810.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="358" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQ2GYpcV_obNRbibGQFJXRQWs4q64ryklcqsUfEw_32zQ8JeScL_bly4uZ4vPlUP93rVRIseb6WPTOjCTz02GMcS-_LGZsFg-aQsw5HcwPh1GfjQJtRlVYF88JZXKZB2szKKIPYi7sJ-wB/s640/QQ%E6%88%AA%E5%9B%BE20130805145810.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
and left enough space for the space creation and the character.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The considering of colours:</div>
<ol>
<li>Warm colours make the elements stand out ,and let people feel more nearer.</li>
<li>Cold colour tone make the objects far away , has air feeling also weaken the objects sometimes.</li>
<li>To emphasise the character, the warm colour tone around him should be better.</li>
<li>The liveaction buidings are too flat in this shot which are not perfect, I will use cool colour tone to cover their details and push them away.</li>
</ol>
The considering of space:<br />
<ul>
<li>The left corner is a little bit empty and flat after I deleted the middle layer, i rendered out a 3D bridge which is created by Michael .I don't want to cover the corner with solid buidings again, I chose the bridge because it 's made by steels and it's just a structrue which will still keep the space feeling of the secen after I added it.</li>
</ul>
The first draft for SH006:<br />

<br />Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11920072146016882832noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6891509902242820286.post-87619423135164683282013-08-04T17:10:00.001-07:002013-08-04T17:10:14.005-07:00The first try of matte painting for shot009SH0T009 is my first try for the conceptual design and matte painting, it requires the style exploration, I need to decide which time is this movie going to be happen, what mood we want to express to our audience and also how to keep the fresh feeling in the entire movie to avoid people feel bored.The feeling we want to make in this short film is sad, away from the noisy city .<br />
<br />
For making the city looks colorful and gorgeous, I decided to use different colours of lights.Our liveaction maerials were shot in the daylight, it's a challenge to make it into the nighttime in colour correction and also the feeling prodution,we want the character fly far away from the world which is not belonged to him, and also make the feeling that he is in the thousand inched sky ,it 's high, dangerous and also mysterious, so ,the feeling of depthe became the most significant one in our project.<br />
<br />
I did a lot of research in the space making, for example :the film "Total recall", "upside down", the concept of the cities and the complex spaces gave me huge inspiration .<br />
<br />
Here's the original cleaned plate of the shot009<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbZ6CRK-LrofMFAZMMsP-JNdNLnjPtlESEinwIFYLmA85XVCYG4sqEcOGYoL5Nuc77I4azOqpdB90c9mghaq3bDXzSV1lOxodm_yGigK2TyqmGbvRb-eQwgTxJGX4ihEdxFgwzREAk2Bub/s1600/QQ%E6%88%AA%E5%9B%BE20130805003316.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbZ6CRK-LrofMFAZMMsP-JNdNLnjPtlESEinwIFYLmA85XVCYG4sqEcOGYoL5Nuc77I4azOqpdB90c9mghaq3bDXzSV1lOxodm_yGigK2TyqmGbvRb-eQwgTxJGX4ihEdxFgwzREAk2Bub/s640/QQ%E6%88%AA%E5%9B%BE20130805003316.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
it looks grey and lack of contrast,not much space in the plate, so what i need to do is take the full use of the right corner to make the space as obvious as possible.<br />
<br />
<br />
This is the first version of the matte painting for this shot. I made a daylight version in this one, which looks nice but the elevator is not suitable for our entire movie,also the quality of the matte painting is not high enough for a realistic film, it still looks like an illustration.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAr8_f1grKKzat4H-EDnyxhqA4V6vacBZstTTVi5ZSOVTHtl4uR7-9dP9S99IO7KL9x3NbT6WilLlEpKuvLACcsrad80mocg-uc8CN6pYh7ISZoNW6Tvib2dYIiCPg7qlsyWBnkBLtyGdc/s1600/QQ%E6%88%AA%E5%9B%BE20130805003240.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAr8_f1grKKzat4H-EDnyxhqA4V6vacBZstTTVi5ZSOVTHtl4uR7-9dP9S99IO7KL9x3NbT6WilLlEpKuvLACcsrad80mocg-uc8CN6pYh7ISZoNW6Tvib2dYIiCPg7qlsyWBnkBLtyGdc/s640/QQ%E6%88%AA%E5%9B%BE20130805003240.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
At that time , I stell didnt find a right way for the realistic matte painting, which made me really confused and stressful, I dont want my stuff couldn't be used in our project.I searched amazon and found a really helpful book called"The digital matte painting handbook"which has amazing tutorials for the beginners.<br />
<br />
This is the final version of matte painting and colour design for the shot009:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I changed the time to night and added some high contrast colours , made the lights for highlight some area to make it more layered.Fog and smoke also be used as one neccasary element which makes the scene mysterious.<br />
<br />
At this stage,the main colours of this film have been decided as red and blue.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11920072146016882832noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6891509902242820286.post-51779067715043622562013-08-03T18:40:00.004-07:002013-08-03T18:40:46.447-07:00Programme of study updatesFrom the first animatic , I found a big problem :All the elements just crowed and placed together with no space or contract in them, also ,the whole animatic movie we've just finished has no colour in it.<br />
<br />
My progamme of study is :concept art for the environment ,which requires a lot of elements: compostion, the contrast of colours,space etc. We prepared all the materials ready to use, but without the design for them, they will never become an successful movie.<br />
So in the period of time from after the texture to the end of july,my mission is :<br />
<br />
1.finish all of the conceptual design for every shot<br />
<br />
2.keep the feeling of the film with colours <br />
<br />
3.finish the high resolution matte paintings for shot001 ,002,008,011,009.<br />
<br />
4.keep communicating with comp team to make sure my work is benefit for their final comp work.<br />
<br />
5.keep on doing the reference and inspiration collecting .Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11920072146016882832noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6891509902242820286.post-66718784656848869812013-08-03T09:06:00.001-07:002013-08-03T09:08:25.084-07:00First animatic <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y22wK4bHIlU">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y22wK4bHIlU</a><br />
<br />
After I ve finished the character's texture, I began to help Michael with the environment modeling in 3D. I want the effect to be damaged and complex to confuse the audience .So I created the damaged bridges and pillars for the shot 009 mainly. For the first animatic , I was in charge of the three shots which have pillars in it. I roughly placed the pillars to match the live action in Maya. <br />
<br />
My program of study is mainly about the environmental design , this was the first try of place elements to make the composition of the shot as good as possible. <br />

To place the elements to let them feel suitable for the scene and also have space and contrast, I didn't just put every useful details in it, i left some space for the scene to let the audience feel can breathe.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11920072146016882832noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6891509902242820286.post-24982891384327176302013-08-02T07:04:00.000-07:002013-08-04T16:05:06.160-07:00Left feet problem solved<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
There was a big problem poped up in the progress when i was doing the texture.We combined the feet and the main body's geometry together, but when we applied the shader to it, the left feet lost, we can't see any colour of it, it went totally black, but when I export then rendered image to nuke, it still have several information on the black part.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj09feW9J4Wv15Oz4njh2TphpogjYaXc2WJ48Nry0waoSsDaGfgdWlxo-tjTq1WQhyphenhyphen7Vse0oo4EJoxg-HcVKmOE0XEqOHYnN8SJJCxie7GQvCXWH2ymxJXq5rkCNd0R134EuRfCNPYlIY4u/s1600/1+copy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj09feW9J4Wv15Oz4njh2TphpogjYaXc2WJ48Nry0waoSsDaGfgdWlxo-tjTq1WQhyphenhyphen7Vse0oo4EJoxg-HcVKmOE0XEqOHYnN8SJJCxie7GQvCXWH2ymxJXq5rkCNd0R134EuRfCNPYlIY4u/s640/1+copy.jpg" width="354" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I tried several ways to solve it:apply lambert ;seperate the feet and the body; made a new geometry of the feet.But they didnt work properly,and it's very ugly when we rendered the character out.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I checked and scaled the renderded image from maya , found there are still bump info on it, only the colour is inorrect. Then I checked the normal_reverse , it's finally worked!The problem is caused by uncorrect normals. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The final step of our fix problems' part is :I reversed every feet for each shot and make sure the animation is still working , then I applied the surface shader to all of the the other part of the character and rendered the feet out only since we dont have time to render the entire character out again.Michael comped all of the shoe part into the final comp at last.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The final correct render of the character:</div>

It's a huge amount of work because our character s armour is made up by more than 35 pieces, which means I need to make approximately the same amount of different shaders for the entire character. I chose the multi passes shader for passes render for the comp team.<br />
<br />
For the main body part, we decided to use the material like the one on spiderman, with net bump on it.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The chest part is the most chanllenged part.Our original idea is:to make an organic heart for the character and also have a close up shot for the heart which we gave up finally.For a visual effect short movie, it's very necessaey to make all of the part as realistic as possible, but to be honest, we couldnt acheive the real heart result perfectly and we dont have any animators in our team, so I created a crack on his glass chest to make it more detailed and let the audience not focus on the heart inside,but leave the heart's red there to rich the colours.</div>

<br />
<br />
I collected many reference images online for the heart for Ikaros, the first picture's texture and patterns on it are really beautiful and attractive, but the problem is :i can see the structure of heart clearly.<br />
<br />
After i finished the first edition of the heart sculpting, i asked my roommate Sarah for help whose major is medical art. She did the correction for the heart for me(the 3rd one).<br />
<br />
As Jin's considering, it's definately very heart to make the heart looks real , and we dont want to ruin the whole quality by the organic parts. We are still working on it, and considering whether we should keep the close-up shot for the heart or not.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11920072146016882832noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6891509902242820286.post-54405443660017851572013-06-08T12:31:00.001-07:002013-06-08T12:31:50.034-07:00sculpting and displacement map test<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCOEia1_LqUwdFRZcviWDFwZgU-P0bp5lUdhIbUs-ixryb6TbBfB4ls964g462HU4sfhY-0rvNtmL4mPM-wG-Oihh0IcmRu1Pbf0SUqp9opalHD9kYuinyufOAIvyGOtGAb-DX0DsSlN4g/s1600/QQ%E6%88%AA%E5%9B%BE20130608201402.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCOEia1_LqUwdFRZcviWDFwZgU-P0bp5lUdhIbUs-ixryb6TbBfB4ls964g462HU4sfhY-0rvNtmL4mPM-wG-Oihh0IcmRu1Pbf0SUqp9opalHD9kYuinyufOAIvyGOtGAb-DX0DsSlN4g/s320/QQ%E6%88%AA%E5%9B%BE20130608201402.jpg" width="291" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWAAQT_boq9slg6JHymaJbdsBzTT5WGVTvWfT5ydXKNWQvDfQQpJ6-7e2qiOOCXNvpJWS7wE_c_7BYmjqSahnD5EiRVSMx1UvM7au5aZtLw-jQ8GQ2VIfV3Kw4ASAYcsEC9HDC6IEw4YHe/s1600/QQ%E6%88%AA%E5%9B%BE20130608201422.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWAAQT_boq9slg6JHymaJbdsBzTT5WGVTvWfT5ydXKNWQvDfQQpJ6-7e2qiOOCXNvpJWS7wE_c_7BYmjqSahnD5EiRVSMx1UvM7au5aZtLw-jQ8GQ2VIfV3Kw4ASAYcsEC9HDC6IEw4YHe/s320/QQ%E6%88%AA%E5%9B%BE20130608201422.jpg" width="299" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSC9A3zYyHGyOwtU8fd7LkCZnE7t-4spcn9T10cVPdwgMIySXtlz4NojL5EVJs6DmJLZMOweI63L-euZi7Bgp56iSeIWkpFmWAVtNDWnJGD1CzGbf6D9RMEzjuM5mk9RLvHrP6fpymmI_4/s1600/QQ%E6%88%AA%E5%9B%BE20130608201455.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="292" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSC9A3zYyHGyOwtU8fd7LkCZnE7t-4spcn9T10cVPdwgMIySXtlz4NojL5EVJs6DmJLZMOweI63L-euZi7Bgp56iSeIWkpFmWAVtNDWnJGD1CzGbf6D9RMEzjuM5mk9RLvHrP6fpymmI_4/s320/QQ%E6%88%AA%E5%9B%BE20130608201455.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicx1w_OQc7aWdiZdIUYXjNTex3z1wLFfM-tRwtWLyFvC8DGg_4Z_TNGu9CwiM3mrsJiUTPj9gjvDcbjB0OZuMpx82cF_Ttl95OfmYjOd5rM_d6_HDXzHTHPY5SknxcuQv5WFvsANlxIY0b/s1600/QQ%E6%88%AA%E5%9B%BE20130608201248.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicx1w_OQc7aWdiZdIUYXjNTex3z1wLFfM-tRwtWLyFvC8DGg_4Z_TNGu9CwiM3mrsJiUTPj9gjvDcbjB0OZuMpx82cF_Ttl95OfmYjOd5rM_d6_HDXzHTHPY5SknxcuQv5WFvsANlxIY0b/s320/QQ%E6%88%AA%E5%9B%BE20130608201248.jpg" width="267" /></a><br />

<br />
As u can see, the displacement didnt match perfect with the original mask low poly mesh. And the biggest problem is:our character has 7 different colours of his whole body which means we need to apply 7 different shaders for him. So the issue for the displacement map is:I need to seperate the model to 7 part with the same colour which is hard to make it,also, jack's already made the poses in every shots which means i need to apply the texture for the character shot by shot.<br />
<br />
I am making and testing the bump map now, the effect is almost the same or even better than the displacement map i exported from Zbrush.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11920072146016882832noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6891509902242820286.post-1895687091367798192013-05-16T08:35:00.000-07:002013-05-16T08:35:00.172-07:00Final house exterior model for "Roses&Dust"<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
